Does cosmology support or challenge Christianity?

Cosmology is the study of the origin and structure of the universe. Far from disproving Christianity, modern cosmology often supports it.

For centuries, some thought the universe was eternal. But in the 20th century, scientists discovered the universe had a beginning—the Big Bang. This agrees with the Bible’s teaching: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

The fine-tuning of the universe also points to design. The laws of physics, the strength of gravity, and the exact balance of forces all allow life to exist. If any were slightly different, life would be impossible. This suggests an intelligent Creator.

Some try to explain this with the “multiverse” idea—countless universes where ours just happens to work. But this is speculation, not evidence. It takes as much faith, if not more, than believing in God.

So cosmology, when studied honestly, supports the Christian view: the universe had a beginning, it is finely ordered, and it points to a purposeful Creator.
