How do we know the disciples did not make up stories?

Some people think the disciples invented the story of Jesus to gain power or followers. But several reasons show this is unlikely.

First, the disciples gained nothing worldly from their message. Instead of wealth or status, they faced persecution, prison, and death. People do not usually suffer for what they know is a lie.

Second, the Gospels are full of embarrassing details about the disciples—Peter denying Jesus, Thomas doubting, and the others running away in fear. If they made up the stories, they would not paint themselves as weak and flawed.

Third, the disciples preached in the same city where Jesus was crucified. If their story were false, people could easily have checked and disproved it. Yet the movement grew because many believed their testimony.

Finally, their message was consistent. Across different places and times, the disciples told the same story: Jesus lived, died, and rose again. This shows truth, not invention.

So the evidence strongly suggests the disciples were telling what they had truly seen and experienced.
