Is the Genesis creation account literal or symbolic?

The first chapters of Genesis describe God creating the world in six days. Some take this as literal, meaning God made everything in six 24-hour days. Others read it as symbolic, meaning the days represent longer periods or a framework for understanding creation.

Both views have been held by faithful Christians. What matters most is not the exact length of time but the message: God created the world, it was good, and humans are made in His image.

Genesis is not written like a modern science textbook. It uses poetic and structured language. The focus is not on scientific detail but on showing that God is the source of all things, not chance or idols.

Whether literal or symbolic, the truth remains that God is Creator, humans are special, and creation has order and purpose. Christians can differ on interpretation while still agreeing on the main point: the world belongs to God.
